6 of the Best Summer Festivals in Chicago

If you’re visiting Chicago [been | want to go] in the summertime, you’re in luck. Every summer, millions of locals and tourists alike brave the heat and flock to downtown Chicago as it comes alive with an infusion of festivals that celebrate the food, culture and arts that make the city so diversely wonderful. If you’re visiting from out of town, there’s no better way to experience the Chicago culture than nibbling on a smoked turkey leg, catching a show from a local up-and-coming band or sitting on the lakefront and taking in a fireworks show. With hundreds of festivals spanning the entire summer, there really is something for everybody to enjoy. Here’s the 411 on a few favorites to check out this summer:
The Taste of Chicago (June 25-July 4, free admission, food and drink tickets sold in strips of 12 for $8) There’s no better way to experience the essence of Chicago than through the food and every year, millions of people flock to the Chicago lakefront to participate in the world’s largest food festival. Local favorites include Lou Malnati’s deep dish pizza, Eli’s Cheesecake and Robinsons No. 1 Ribs. And to cool off from the summer heat, make sure you try a Rainbow Cone, a Taste of Chicago favorite that layers scoops of chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts) and pistachio ice creams and orange sherbet on top of a waffle cone.  Each day offers different live music to groove along with as you sample your way through the best food Chicago has to offer. This year’s lineup includes Salt-n-Pepa, Gavin Rossdale, Los Lonely Boys, Mat Kearney and Rob Thomas. And here’s a tip from a local: each booth offers a taster portion of a dish or two. Taster portions give you a smaller portion for less tickets, allowing you to experience more and get more bang for your buck.

Old St. Pat’s World’s Largest Block Party (July 9-10, 2010,  $40 for a one-night pass/$70 for a two night pass) Every year, thousands of people flock to this two-night music fest that benefits St. Pat’s Church, the oldest public building in Chicago. Tickets include five drinks (alcoholic or non) and access to the musical stages. Headlining this year’s festival are American Idol 2009 winner Kris Allen,  the Barenaked Ladies and Spoon. And if you’re single and looking to mingle, local legend has it that this is the festival to meet your mate- nearly 100 pairs have met at the World’s Largest Block Party and gone on to marry.
Pitchfork Music Festival (July 16-18, 2010, $40 for a single day pass/$90 for a three-day pass) Three days, three stages, 41 shows. For the past five years, indie music lovers have packed into Chicago’s Union Park to hear their favorite musicians and discover some new tunes. Adding to the indie flair of the event is the Chicago Independent Radio Project (CHIRP) Record Fair, where you can pick up a few vinyl discs to spin at home.

Windy City Ribfest (July 16-18, 2010, $5 suggested donation for entry) Good food, good music…what more could you ask for? A dozen musical acts (headlined this year by Sister Hazel and Tonic) provide the tunes as the best of the best in Midwestern barbecue duke it out and smoked meat enthusiasts sample the dozens of barbecued specialties. Come hungry and BYOB (bring your own bib).
Lollapalooza (August 6-8, 2010, $90 for a one day pass/$215 for a three-day pass) One of the world’s largest music festivals, Lollapalooza celebrates its fifth year in Chicago this year. Music lovers from around the globe pack their tents, picnic gear and sunscreen and head out to Grant Park every year for this three-day music fest that features hundreds of acts on eight stages. Sunup to sundown, punk rock to alternative, heavy metal to hip hop, there’s no greater celebration of musical diversity than this weekend fest.

The Chicago Air and Water Show (August 14-15, 2010, free admission) Parachuters? Check. Aerobats? Check. Speed boats? Check. More than two million people check themselves onto Chicago’s lakefront beaches yearly to watch this action spectacle take place. For more than 50 years, the Chicago Air and Water Show has been giving spectators an action show they won’t forget. The crowds are heavy and the air is thick, but there’s nothing quite like seeing the Blue Angels fly in formation or the water spraying off the wave runners in the extreme water show. Another tip from a local: If you’re around town the day before the festival, they do run-throughs of the routines. If you happen to be around the lakefront when they’re practicing, you can see the show and avoid the crowds.

On any given weekend in Chicago, there’s something being celebrated somewhere and the best way to experience the true culture and diversity of the city is to get out into it and explore it. Taste something new. Listen to a new band. Peruse the handmade goods at a craft fair. For a complete list of summertime activities throughout the city, you can check out the official visitors site for the city at http://www.choosechicago.com.

Luxury Travel on a Backpacker Budget

Want to travel in luxury, but feel you’re limited because of your backpacker’s budget? Believe it or not, it is possible to find inexpensive luxury travel, if you spend a little extra time searching for good deals. Getting the most value for your money is important no matter where you travel, but even more so if you’re considering luxury travel. Here are some tips and tricks to help you enjoy resort opulence on a hostelry budget.

Last Minute Vacations
One of the easiest ways to find great deals on luxury travel is by booking at the last minute, if your plans and schedule are flexible enough to allow you to do so. Sometimes, through booking at the last minute, you can save hundreds of dollars off your luxury vacation. The Internet can be a big help in finding great last minute deals on luxury travel.  Lastminute.com specializes in finding great deals on airfare, luxury resorts, car rentals, and more, and can be used as little as three hours before you plan to fly. Last second deals from $199 are even available here.Another site offering last minute vacation deals is  LastMinuteTravel.com.  This site is different in that is specializes in finding luxury resort deals. For example, a recent search found a five-star luxury hotel in Los Angeles starting at $155 USD per night, and a three-star luxury hotel on Miami Beach from $68 USD per night.

Choose the Right Destination
Savvy travelers know that the best way to travel luxuriously and cheaply is to choose a destination where the U.S. dollar currently enjoys a high value. If you choose to travel to Bail, Malaysia, the Philippines or Thailand, for example, your dollar will go much father and help you afford much more luxurious accommodations than it would in Europe or North America. Inna Grand Bali Beach, in Indonesia, is a five-star resort with a reasonable rate starting at just $66 USD per night. This resort houses luxurious amenities including a spa, golf course, swimming pool, and fine restaurant. Or you could choose to stay in the opulent Orient Palace Hotel located on the beach in Sousse, Tunisia, for rates starting at $58 USD per night. This luxurious resort offers guests amenities such as swimming pools, tennis courts, five fine restaurants, fitness center and salon/spa.

At certain times of the year, some destinations within the United States are discounted as well. Las Vegas and Atlantic City casino hotels often offer great deals through the week to attract visitors who could not normally afford such opulent accommodations. Typically, casino hotel rooms offer guests king size beds, in-room Jacuzzis and turn-down service, all luxurious amenities not found elsewhere. Signing up for a casino’s email alerts can let you know when their rates are discounted, sometimes at deals as low as $39 per night through the week. Check AtlanticCity.com or Vegas.com for the latest casino hotel deals.

Travel at the Perfect Time
If your travel schedule is flexible enough to allow you to choose the time of the year in which you plan to travel, you can save a bundle. Avoid the busiest seasons and holidays when looking for discount luxury travel. Each destination has a different peak season, so do a little research before planning you trip to steer clear of that time. Traveling just before or just after peak season can guarantee you the best prices. Sometimes luxury resorts will offer special packages off-season to entice those who would not normally be able to afford to stay there in-season.

Consider a Luxury Travel Package
If you choose carefully, you can sometimes find an entire luxury travel package, complete with airfare, accommodations, even a rental car, at a drastic discount off the regular price. Going through a trusted local travel agent is one way to do so, although chances are you’ll end up paying more than you would if you booked such a package yourself online.
TravelWizard offers discounts on cruises, resorts, and entire luxury vacation packages to destinations all over the world. They claim to be able to save travelers 10% to 50% off advertised prices. Some of the do-it-yourself travel groups, such as Expedia or Priceline, can help you put together your own luxury vacation package at a discount. These sites offer reviews of luxury resorts, the best airline prices, and car rental discounts to enable you to create the ultimate inexpensive luxury vacation.

Collect Frequent Flyer Miles
Another way to enjoy luxury travel to a destination of your choosing at a great discount is to use frequent flyer miles. If you travel by air often enough to collect frequent flyer miles, they can really reduce the cost of your flight to your favorite luxury destination. While airlines do pose some restrictions on frequent flier miles (when they can be used, where they can be used, etc.), taking some time and doing some planning should enable you to use these miles to fly to the destination of your choice at a time convenient for you. Make sure to use your frequent flyer miles before they begin to lose value, however.
Some frequent flyer miles can also be earned by staying at hotels that offer you miles for each dollar you spend. Certain stores and restaurants will reimburse your loyalty through frequent flyer miles as well. Sites such as FrequentFlier and WebFlyer can help you make the most of your frequent flier opportunities. Look for special promotions to collect frequent flyer miles throughout the year, then once you’ve saved up, you’ll be able to fly to your luxury destination at a drastic discount.

Opt for an All-Inclusive Luxury Resort
All-inclusive luxury resorts are the perfect answer for those who want to prepay for their luxury vacation. With an all-inclusive vacation package, virtually everything is paid for ahead of time. Most all-inclusive luxury resort packages will cover accommodations, some meals and drinks per guest, activities, taxes, fees, tips, and sometimes airfare or other transportation if desired.
With the economy lagging, some all-inclusive resorts have been offering huge discounts on their package prices. Again, if you can choose when you will travel, you can save a bundle on an all-inclusive luxury vacation package. One site on the Internet that helps travelers find the best all-inclusive vacation deals available is Discount-All-Inclusive.com, which offers discounted all-inclusive luxury resort in Jamaica, Mexico, the Caribbean and elsewhere. Another such site is All-Inclusive.com, offering package luxury all-inclusive deals on resort chains such as Sandals, Dreams, Palace, Excellence, Sunscape and more.

Beware of Membership Fees and Travel Scams
When you’re planning a luxury vacation, sometimes you might be tempted to take advantage of “membership deals” which guarantee to get you the lowest prices available. However, most of these sites will actually be taking advantage of you. Beware of “Travel Clubs” that want to charge you a $99 (or more) annual fee to become a member, thus guaranteeing you their “exclusive” discounts at luxury resorts. In addition to this overpriced membership fee, you’ll end up spending far more on their “discount luxury travel” than you would if you had just booked the trip yourself using a means that doesn’t charge an exorbitant fee.
Unfortunately, there are all too many travel scams out there, with greedy individuals who are more than willing to take your money to guarantee you a “discount” luxury travel package. Remember that there’s no such thing as a “free” vacation. Don’t be tempted by those enticing offers that arrive by mail, email or via fax offering you a free luxury holiday. If they look too good to be true, that’s because they are.
Avoid timeshare scams as well. While it might be tempting to stay a night in a luxury resort you otherwise would not be able to afford, remember that there’s always fine print to read. If you don’t fulfill all of the company’s requirements (stay at the timeshare program for a certain amount of time, tour a specified area, etc) you’ll be charged full price for the luxury room you occupied, and your discount luxury trip will suddenly become an expensive nightmare.

Finally, while it’s a good idea to use reputable discount travel websites to assist you in finding a cheap luxury vacation, remember to use ones you’ve heard of, that have been proven tried and true by others. Sites like Priceline an Orbitz have been in business for a while and are known to be legitimate. Stay away from sketchy sites you’ve never heard of that have not been recommended to you by someone you trust.

Taking some precautions and following these steps will ensure that you find the best priced luxury vacation that’s the most suitable for you.

How to Get Married in South Africa

In 2006, my Aussie brother married his long time Kiwi girlfriend in Cape Town, South Africa. Now, why would an Aussie, marrying a Kiwi, want to get married in South Africa? Despite the fact that it is incredibly beautiful with so much to see and enjoy, it’s a place very special to the heart of who they are as a couple.  Just what a wedding should be about- a memorable kickstart to a wonderful marriage. My husband and I, along with 10 other friends and family were invited to experience their piece of paradise, and have not just an enjoyable one day wedding affair, but a wedding adventure that lasted two weeks. Want to experience the same? Here’s how.

Send out Invitations
Start by inviting your family and closest friends.  Throw away the list of your mother’s long lost childhood friend, and the girl you shared crayons with in Kindergarten. As wonderful as these people may be, we all know you no longer talk to them, or have anything in common. No more guilty feelings of obligations. Getting married overseas gives you that excuse you’ve been looking for, to have only the most important people at your wedding, and to make it all about you.

Chase animals at Kruger National Park
From Johannesburg, your meeting point, you can hire a vehicle to drive up to Kruger National Park. Kruger is often recognized as being one of Africa’s best wildlife viewing experiences.  Campsites and lodging places can be found all over the park. Kruger is about the size of the country of Wales, so before you go, do some research, and center your accomodation and driving experience around the best places to be.  The Lower Sabie rest camp is one of the best for all year round viewing, with a restaurant deck overlooking the river and the hippos that play there. Spend the early mornings searching for leopards and lion on the hunt, and the daytimes resting back at camp before enjoying a sunset drive.  Take a highly recommended walking safari, or for the less daring, an organized night safari drive. Come together in the evenings to braai (South African for BBQ) and drink to the night time sounds of roaring lions and elephants tearing down tree branches.

Rent a House with Views of Table Mountain
Fly down to Cape Town to prepare for the wedding. Rent a mansion, with views of Table Mountain from your bedroom window, on the hillsides of the Gardens district. Here you will be within walking distance to all the sights of Cape Town, and a short drive to gorgeous Cape Town beaches.  Enjoy breakfasts together as a wedding party family, explore Cape Town during the day, and return to the comfort of your luxurious home, for a swim in your private pool, and a celebratory evening barbecue party.  This was a welcomed luxury for backpackers like us, as we would usually never have the funds to enjoy accommodation like this. However, chipping in with a big group makes it an easily affordable vacation home.

Spend your Days Exploring the Delights of Cape Town
Cape Town is a beautiful, vibrant city with many sights to explore and experience.  Walk around the old, bustling  Victorian Harbour and watch seals playing under the watchful gaze of the majestic Table Mountain. Catch a ferry out to the historic Robben Island, the prison home of Nelson Mandela.  Take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain for amazing views of Cape Town, and either hike or drive up to the top of Lions head for awesome views over the Ocean.
Hire a car and take a driving tour of the Cape Headland Peninsula. Start by taking the world recognized, Chapman’s’ Peak Drive, where rocks threaten to cascade down from the stunning imposing mountain peaks above. From there you can drive down to the tip of the Cape of Good Hope, where baboons freely run amuck, and on the way back around you can play and swim with the penguins at Boulder’s Beach, Simon’s Town. While you have the car, why not visit Stellenbosch, the area renowned for exquisite South African wines.

Have a Combined Last night of Freedom Party at La Med, Clifton Beach
Home of the beautiful people, Clifton Beach is the place to see and be seen. During the day it’s a perfect place to sit at one of the many cafés that line the beach front and people watch.  Clifton has four interlocking, white sand beaches divided by granite boulders. The mystique of Table Mountain looms in the background, helping to make it the glamorous place for the beautiful people to languidly throw frisbees around, or watch the passing sail boats from their rented chairs. However, none dare enter the depths of the turquoise waters, as the Atlantic Ocean makes it far too chilly for anything more than a quick dip.

Make La Med, on Clifton Beach, the place to have a combined hens and bucks night (bachelorette and stag’s night). La Med has panoramic views of the ocean and mountains; undoubtedly the best sunset drinking views in Cape Town.  There is a beer garden deck out the front for you to sit with a few drinks and watch the setting sun.  Help the bride and groom send out their single status in style with games, party tricks, dancing, and drinking.

Get Married in Kirstenbosh National Botanical Gardens
Kirstenbosch Gardens sits at the foot of Table Mountain and is known as one of the seven magnificent botanical gardens in the world.  You may even feel in the mood for a quick hike up one of the many trails to the top of Table Mountain for views of the whole of Cape Town before the wedding.  The diversity and beauty of the plant life on display in the gardens along with the magnificent backdrop of the mountain makes it a beautiful setting for a small and intimate wedding.

Have Photos and Champagne at Llandudno Beach
A small, beautiful, boulder bordered beach along the Atlantic Seaboard, Llandudno beach is a local favorite among the surfers and nature lovers. It’s secluded location keeps the Cape Town winds away, and the lack of restaurants and cafes helps it to retain its natural charm. It’s the perfect spot to gather the wedding party together for photos and champagne as the sun sets and fires up the mountain behind it.

Have a Dinner Reception at Mama Africa Restaurant
After the fun of not just the wedding but the two weeks spent together, it’s time to kick up your heels in a final celebration at the reception at Mama Africa’s restaurant and bar. Mama Africa is in a historic building on Long Street, the inner city place of nightlife vibrancy. Sounds of African drumming music accompany traditional African cuisine, like kudu or crocodile, and an eclectic décor, of mostly handmade African goods, help to create a warm, African atmosphere.

Mama desires that all people leave at the end of the night with a full belly and a happy heart, and I can say our small, traveling wedding party, had beaming smiles of an adventure well enjoyed, when we departed ways. Mama Africa was the perfect end to an African experience never to be forgotten.

Fun Seoul Attractions by Day and Night, by Sophia Sparks

Planning a trip to Seoul, Korea? Have a few days to burn? Here are some of Seoul’s most memorable must-see attractions.

Gyeongdong Market
If you seek an exotic foods experience in Korea, head no further than Gyeongdong Market, located in the Dongdaemun-gu district of Seoul. National tourism publication Korea Sparkling describes it as a “traditional herbal medicine market.” Its herbal au naturel scent starts from the moment you disembark the subway. Be forewarned: this is not for the squeamish.
I decided to investigate the market for myself in an attempt to find an herbal remedy.  From the moment I walked up the metro steps directly into the maze of little stalls, the pungent smell of fish and herbs wafted through the air. Stalls sell everything imaginable here: mud-covered roots, animals, colorful powders, and jellies. If you are seeking alternative treatments, it is not possible to conduct business unless you speak fluent Korean or bring an interpreter. The last thing you want to do is confuse your prescription by pronouncing one syllable incorrectly.

Leathery-faced ajumas, or old ladies, chop herbs and cooked potions, shouting at customers to buy their daily special. Turtles, worms, and strange squirming creatures flip around in buckets of water. I stopped to take a picture of some of the critters, but was stopped when someone hit me in the back. “Ani! Ani!” a lady shouted at me, mumbling in Korean. A group of people began to crowd around me, staring and chattering as if I were the first foreigner they had ever seen.

I concluded that despite my interest in exotic alternative medicines, the most natural solution would be to turn back to modern medicine and just take a Tums or Beano. If I ingested most of the concoctions, I would surely end up in the international clinic with a plethora of bugs or a tapeworm. Alas, I left empty-handed, happy to escape the scent of garlic, sweat and bugs. This is a Seoul must-see sight, whether you know what to do with unlabelled roots or not. Roald Dahl could have drawn inspiration from this spectacular display of alternative health products.

Jimjilbong (Naked Fun!)
What the heck is a jimjilbong? The best invention that never happened in the West! It’s like the YMCA on steroids. Located throughout Seoul, they are large 24 hour community centers that feature multiple fitness centers, pools, saunas and steam rooms inside. They offer spa services, snacks, alcohol, a babysitting center, restaurants, sleeping areas and free movies.

How much does a day or overnight cost here? Admission is just $7 USD. Upon entrance, you are given an electronic wristband to make charges for extra items such as food and beverage purchase and beauty purchases. A spa uniform is provided, and there are separate nude spa areas for men and women.

When I first visited the jimjilbong, I was too wimpy to get naked.  A few drinks later, I mustered up the courage to go nude and discovered the even more luxurious domain of the female jimjilbong. The enormous center featured ten marble tub pools of varying temperatures from hot to freezing, as well as individual baths, showers, steam and herb-infused saunas for health. I ordered the full body massage and scrub by pointing at the services menu to one of the spa ladies. A few minutes later, a lady in a wet black bra and panty set arrived and ordered me to lie down on the table. It took a few minutes to relax, but she soon massaged and scrubbed me until my body went limp. For $25 USD for a one-hour massage and exfoliation, you cannot beat the price and memorable experience.

If you don’t want to get nude, grab a dinner at one of the many cafes or restaurants or go for a swim. Male/female groups can relax in the co-ed area, which feature cold, hot, salt, and green tea vapor rooms.  Televisions are widely available and they are child-friendly. Jimjilbongs are focused on community and health, and after a few relaxing hours here you will feel refreshed and ready to face the world.
Dongdaemun Fashion District
When I first heard about this shopper’s paradise in Seoul I was more excited than a child who still believes in Santa. The megaplex shopping centers, vendors, and peddlers selling goods is visually overwhelming. You can buy everything fashion-related here from wacky accessories to sample socks for international buyers. If sparkly bits and bobs, eclectic clothes appeal and the occasional pirated imports appeal to you, look no further than Dongdaemun.

Large stores such as Doota, Migliore and Hello AM/PM sell floor after floor and row after endless row of clothing, ranging in price from dirt cheap to expensive. Sizes run very small, mainly ranging between 00-4. If you are slightly larger, expect vendors to ask “why are you so big?” Sometimes big means tall, but you never can be quite sure. As a standard size two, I was usually not allowed to try clothes on because they told me, “No! You so big! You stretch clothes!”
Shoes over size 8.5 for women are a rare catch. However, if you can fit them you are in luck. The Korean woman’s passion for cute shoes puts the Sex and the City cast to shame and all for a great price. If you can pass on the designer duds, a standard pair can run from $6-15. Having bought numerous pairs, including a glitzy bedazzled pair of stilettos, I can attest that they are very comfortable and hold up well.

When shopping here, make sure you take frequent breaks and stay hydrated otherwise the visual overstimulation could send you tumbling down a flight of escalators as I did. Be aware that shops are closed on Monday. A little patience, a little luck and some negotiation skills can have you armed with shopping bags by the end of the day.

Street Food, Anywhere and Everywhere, Seoul

Mmmm. Street food. So greasy, so delicious, yet so vile all at once. I was surprised to find that most of the stands in the city serve the exact same set menu. Spicy rice noodles, corndogs and a variety of fry-on-demand bits like egg, octopus, mandu and rice balls are widely available. Simply order by pointing at what you want and the owner will prepare it and service it piping hot.

Usually the stands have plastic chairs, where you can sit and gobble up your little snack that costs between $1-5.  Stand owners are usually very friendly and will gladly serve you a cup of water and provide chopsticks and napkins. If you are not accustomed to regularly eating very spicy food, you might need to blow your nose. Tissues are always provided at the stands. Best of all, this is a vegetarian option.

Day Trip to North Korea
If you are American a day trip to North Korea is not a wise idea.  However, day tours to the DMZ (demilitarized zone) are available through the USO or other private tour companies. Features include visits to Camp Bonifas, the Military Armistice Building, Checkpoint 3, the Bridge of No Return, and North Korea’s giant flagpole at Propaganda Village.

From the moment your bus begins to approach the first camp, you can see North Korea across the river. I took a trip with the USO and it is a chilling experience. Through large binoculars, visitors can look into Propaganda Village, a fake village created by North Koreans to show their prosperity. No one lives there and their land is ravaged, yet we were able to see a few people working in the fields.

At the Military Armistice Building, which is the negotiation room between the North and South, you can witness the opposing sides facing each other just feet apart without flinching for hours. It is eerie to stand in front of the North Koreans as they look out of their building’s windows with binoculars at the tourists. I had a slight fear of being shot point blank by a Northern soldier, however a disclaimer must be signed as this is a small risk. Despite the chilling, somewhat dangerous feeling of this trip, it is one of the last divided countries in the world making it a true must-see.
